Fire the Ballista!

There has been a lot (and I mean a LOT) of snow lately! We've been spending time outdoors when it isn't too cold. The kids have enjoyed "helping" to shovel as much as they've enjoyed sledding and building snowmen, and Bean is still taking her weekly ski lessons at Pat's Peak. I must say, though, we've had enough and we're ready for Spring!
When not exploring in the snow, we've tackled formal learning projects, which can be just as fun and definitely keep us more warm! Bean started a new book that involves building models for different body parts and systems. She started with the eye, and this is her second project, the skeleton. Next we're doing teeth. She not only loves learning it, she spends hours "teaching" her brothers. Whether or not they understand her is unclear, but they enjoy her enthusiasm and repeat everything she says. They also like to hold hands with the skeleton.
Bean loves all things science, so we do a lot of it. What better way to review supersaturated solutions than to make rock candy!
One of our big projects for the past couple of weeks has been making a ballista for Latin class. I use the term "our" loosely, it was primarily a Daddy Project. Bean helped as much as she could, and I.... well, I took pictures.

All the work was worth it. Latin class was amazing! The class is only supposed to last 30 minutes, but this week's went nearly two hours. The kids were having so much fun building cities out of cards and then invading them with their ballistas, and they were learning so much by working together and testing different building and launching tactics, the teacher didn't want to stop them. Formal "class" didn't start for over an hour. Homeschooling rocks!

In the end, they did finally sit down and have "class", where they learned Latin prepositions like "over", "under", and "inside". They've almost completed their first book, and will be soon moving on to Minimus Secondus. We confirmed today that the teacher will be available to continue right through the summer. Yay!
Bean has also been teaching the boys how to make puppets and perform puppet shows. She's such a patient, caring, loving big sister.... most of the time anyway. :-)
Of course, there has also been plenty of time for just enjoying each other's company, and for snuggling up in front of the tv on those cold, snowy days. Maybe winter isn't so bad after all.
